Straw Tower in Gdańsk
monuments
Built in 1346 to strengthen the defenses of the medieval fortifications of Gdańsk in the west, the tower is topped with a distinctive conical roof. It strangely contrasts with the might of the walls, as the thickness of the tower's lower part reaches 4 meters. The lowest floor of the tower contains a warehouse, indicating its original use as a redoubt adapted for long and independent defense. After the construction of the Great Arsenal next to it, it served as a powder magazine, and later became a fodder warehouse for horses, hence its present name.
