St. Mary's Gate in Gdansk

monuments

Mariacka Gate, built at the end of the 15th century, clearly resembles the neighboring Chlebicka and Holy Spirit Gates in its shape. On the city side, there is the coat of arms of Gdańsk, in use since 1457, depicting two lions holding a shield with two crosses topped with a crown. On the Motława side, at the passage, the Gate is adorned with a collection of coats of arms, with the coat of arms of the Republic of Poland placed in the central part, while the coats of arms of Gdańsk and Royal Prussia lean towards it, in a symbolic gesture of heraldic homage.

The Gate is adorned with battlements, partly doubled, and topped with pointed arches. During the Second World War, the Gate suffered serious damage, but in the 1960s, it was rebuilt and transformed into the seat of the Archaeological Museum.

In 1998, a commemorative plaque honoring Alexander von Humboldt and his connections with Gdańsk, including his honorary membership in the local Natural Science Society, was placed on the Motława side.
