Sant Barbara Church in Gdansk
monuments
The church was built on the site of a former wooden hospital chapel, which existed here at least until the second half of the 14th century. Due to numerous fires that ravaged the district, the church was rebuilt multiple times. Particularly interesting are the modern, impressive stained glass windows facing the street. The church of St. Barbara once housed relics of the martyr from Nicomedia, which most likely arrived in Pomerania during the reign of Duke Świętopełk. During Gdańsk’s war with Stephen Báthory, the reliquary was melted down into coins, and the martyr's arm was transferred to a church in the Long Gardens area. What happened to it afterward remains unknown.
