The building, erected at the beginning of the 20th century as military barracks, has been serving as the seat of the State Higher School of Music since 1966. The school was founded in Sopot in 1947 by Stefan Śledziński, and in 1966 it was relocated from Sopot to Gdańsk. The main goal of the institution is to educate highly qualified artists, including instrumentalists, vocalists, actors, composers, music theorists, conductors, educators, and instructors. In the 2007-2008 season, the academy celebrated its 60th anniversary.
