Monument of Captain Tadeusz Ziółkowski, Master Mariner, in Gdańsk

monuments

The monument to Captain Tadeusz Ziółkowski, a master mariner, created by Stanisław Szwechowicz, was unveiled in 1990 at Rybackie Pobrzeże in Gdańsk. Ziółkowski was the first commander of the ship "Lwów" after Poland regained independence. In 1939, as the chief harbor pilot (equivalent to a port captain), he opposed the entry of the German battleship "Schleswig-Holstein" into Gdańsk. He was arrested by the Germans, and for his patriotism and steadfastness, he was murdered on Good Friday in 1940 as one of the first prisoners of the Stutthof concentration camp.
