Communal Cemetery in Sopot
The oldest cemetery in Sopot was established in 1878 as an evangelical one and covers approximately 13 hectares of a forest rich in various tree species. The former cemetery chapel has been expanded and now serves parishioners as the church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Many tombstones, especially German ones, are glacial erratic boulders with engraved inscriptions. Others, particularly more recent ones, are interesting works of sculptural art. The cemetery contains the graves of the Herbst family, writer Stanisława Fleszerowa-Muskat, researcher of Kashubian dialects Fryderyk Lorenz, journalist and poet Ewa Moskalówna, sculptor Adam Smolana, the first rector of a secondary school Ernst Jahnke, and a monument to the renowned Sopot architect Adolf Bielefeldt. There is also a symbolic place of remembrance for the Home Army and a German monument to the Aviators.
