Anchorite Tower in Gdańsk

monuments

The gate was built in 1361 as a flank of the southern fortifications of Gdańsk and the areas of former shipyards. In the 16th century, the construction of bastion walls surrounded by a moat began. From 1623 to 1638, Old Dutch-type bastions, designed by Kameliusz van den Bosch, were added from the south. As a result of these actions, the tower lost its original military significance. In the years 1570-1575, the architect Paulus van der Horne carried out the renovation of the tower, increasing the height of the roof and transforming it into a municipal prison for particularly dangerous criminals. Currently, the building serves as the headquarters of conservation services, which took over its management in 1975.
