The Art Pavilion in Sopot: Classicism, Art and Transformations
In 1911, a unique, neoclassical building, the Art Pavilion, was erected in Sopot's Northern Park. Designed by architect Paul Puchmueller at the request of the Gdansk Association of Fine Artists, the pavilion is maintained in the style of modernized classicism. Thanks to specially designed windows, the spacious exhibition hall was illuminated by natural light, which was ideal for presenting works of art.
The Art Pavilion was officially opened on June 2, 1911, and since then it has become an important place for art in Sopot, hosting annual and occasional exhibitions. After the end of World War II, the building began to serve new functions - initially it housed the Sculpture Department of the State Higher School of Fine Arts, known as the "Sopot school", and later served the Workers' Holiday Fund.
Currently, after further transformations, the pavilion operates as the Sfinks club, still being a place for cultural meetings and events, although in a completely different character than years ago.
