Pioneer development of lower Sopot, a manor house from the 19th century
Barons erected their houses in upper Sopot. In the lower part, a fishing settlement was located near the present entrance to the pier. The recreational qualities of lower Sopot were only noticed in the 19th century. In 1822, retired officer E. Bornstaedt built a summer manor in a secluded place, to the south of the fishing settlement. The single-storey manor with a double-pitched ceramic roof with gables. In the old days, this building had a wooden porch on the east side with a platform supported by four wooden pillars, from where there was a view of the Gdańsk Bay and the coastal dunes. A veranda was added at the end of the 19th century. The owner of the pioneering house did not enjoy peace for long, as in 1823, Dr. Haffner's bathing establishment was established by the sea, giving rise to the spa in Sopot. The manor was located in the most populous part of Sopot in the summer season.
