The building was built in the early twentieth century as a military barracks. Since 1966 it houses the State Higher School of Music. The school was founded in Sopot in 1947 by Stephen Śledzińskiego. In 1966, the university moved from Sopot to Gdansk. Its goals are to educate highly qualified artists, instrumentalists, singers, actors, composers, music theorists, conductors, educators, instructors. In the years 2007-2008 the Academy celebrated its 60th Anniversary.
